Ryan Hunter-Reay wins 2012 Honda Indy Toronto
July 8, 2012 (Toronto, ON) – After a closely contested race on the streets of Toronto, Ryan Hunter-Reay of Fort-Lauderdale, Florida captured the 2012 edition of the Honda Indy Toronto. His victory, his third consecutive in the IZOD IndyCar Series, propels him to the leadership position in the series standings. His win was hard fought in an exciting race that featured multiple leader changes, two cautions and numerous incidents of car-on-car contact. Charlie Kimball earned a career best performance with a second place finish while Mike Conway impressed fans with a swift shift from an 11th starting spot to a season-high third place finish.
Canadian fan favourites, buoyed by popular support all weekend, experienced challenging days. Hometown boy James Hinchcliffe had his race come to an abrupt finish with 39 laps to go while Alex Tagliani battled his way to a tenth place finish.
According to race promoters the grandstands, suites, vendor facilities and general admission areas were full – and indicative of year-over-year growth in all areas of measurement monitored by the promoters, Green Savoree Toronto, since 2009.
The 2012 race featured an action-packed schedule including three fundraisers: a YMCA Relay Race, a Bay Street Grand Prix charity race in support of Sunnybrook’s Women & Babies Program, and the popular Free Friday at the track, courtesy of the Ontario Honda Dealers Association. Onsite activities included an expanded Honda World, Dr Pepper Cooler Can Racing and sampling, Hot Wheels displays and activities, a busy Craft Beer House as well as an international food lane. The major fan areas were covered with people – including a large percentage of families – taking advantage of the good weather and festival-like atmosphere.
